A MEMORIAL TO VICTIMS OF HOMICIDE

Why This Memorial Is Important

Losing a loved one through violence is a wrenching experience for the victim's family and friends.

Immediate survivors discover firsthand the importance of paying homage, seeking solace and hope, and working for peace. In the absence of acknowledgment, the human tendency for denial will prevail and recognition of the negative impact of violence will be suppressed. Our goal is to improve understanding of the cost of violence to our society regardless of the circumstance of the homicide.

For the families involved in the creation of the Garden, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, which roused all Americans from their complacency regarding, was yet another stark reminder of the threats to our safety even within a free society. The Garden of Peace addresses the collective sorrow of our city and our nation regarding these catastrophic as well as individual losses.

Any survivor of a homicide victim will tell you--violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime… See: Personal Stories.
